Sucess Stories - Sophie

From Restriction to Independence

When Sophie, name changed for confidentiality, arrived at one of our homes, she was subject to a DoLs order due to significant risks to her safety and wellbeing, required 2:1 staffing at all times, had frequent missing episodes, had been out of education for a considerable period, and had experienced multiple placement breakdowns, leaving her mistrustful of professionals. Our team knew she needed consistency, patience and genuine relationships, so staff worked closely with the placing Local Authority, her social worker, education providers and the courts to create a structured plan focused on stability, safety and gradual independence.

Building Trust

The first stage of Sophie’s journey focused on helping her feel safe and understood. Through consistent routines, therapeutic support, and meaningful engagement, Sophie slowly began to build trusting relationships with the staff team. Our in-house professionals supported the team to ensure approaches were trauma-informed and tailored to Sophie’s needs.

Re-engaging with Education

Once Sophie felt more settled, the focus shifted to reintroducing education at a pace she felt comfortable with. Initially this involved short, supported sessions and flexible learning opportunities. Over time, her confidence grew and she began regularly engaging with education, something she had previously refused.

Reducing Risk

Our staff team worked closely with Emily to build trusting relationships and to better understand the challenges she was facing. Through consistent engagement and careful observation, it became clear that Emily required access to highly specialised services and interventions that went beyond what a standard residential setting could offer.

Rather than focusing solely on maintaining the placement, our priority remained what was genuinely in Emily’s best interests.

Achieving Greater Independence

After months of positive progress:

  • Sophie’s 2:1 staffing was safely reduced to 1:1
  • Her DoLs order was lifted
  • She demonstrated the ability to manage greater independence and responsibility

This was a significant milestone not just for Sophie, but for everyone involved in supporting her.

A Successful Transition

After 18 months of dedicated work, Sophie was ready to move on to the next stage of her journey. She successfully transitioned into a foster placement, equipped with the confidence, stability, and support network she needed to continue thriving.

The Outcome

Sophie’s journey highlights what can be achieved when young people are given the right environment, the right support, and professionals who truly believe in them.

What began as a placement requiring high levels of restriction and supervision ended as a story of growth, resilience, and independence.

Today, Sophie is engaged in education, living in a family environment, and no longer experiencing missing episodes.

A transformation that demonstrates the power of consistent, relationship-led care.
