Sucess Stories - Emily

Advocating for the Right Support

When Emily, name changed to protect confidentiality, arrived at our home, she was subject to a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, DoLs, order and had already experienced multiple placement breakdowns, leaving her unsettled and unsure about trusting the adults around her. Her behaviours and complex needs meant previous placements had struggled to provide the specialist support she required, so our focus was on helping her feel safe and stable, while fully understanding her needs and advocating for the right long term support.

Understanding the Young Person

Our staff team worked closely with Emily to build trusting relationships and to better understand the challenges she was facing. Through consistent engagement and careful observation, it became clear that Emily required access to highly specialised services and interventions that went beyond what a standard residential setting could offer.

Rather than focusing solely on maintaining the placement, our priority remained what was genuinely in Emily’s best interests.

Collaborative Working

We worked collaboratively with Emily’s social worker, the Local Authority, and legal representatives, sharing our professional observations and evidence gathered during her time with us. Our team contributed to discussions and court processes to help ensure that decision-makers had a clear understanding of Emily’s needs.

By supporting the Local Authority through this process, we helped highlight that Emily would benefit from a specialist provider better equipped to meet her specific therapeutic and clinical requirements.

Supporting the Transition

Following the court’s decision and professional recommendations, Emily moved to a specialist service, with our staff supporting a planned, gradual transition alongside her and the provider, recognising that moves can be challenging after multiple placement breakdowns.

Staff supported Emily in:

  • Preparing emotionally for the move
  • Visiting and familiarising herself with the new environment
  • Building early relationships with her new care team

This approach ensured the transition was positive, stable, and focused on continuity of care.

The Outcome

Although Emily’s journey with us was shorter than some placements, the work carried out during this time played a crucial role in ensuring she accessed the right support, in the right environment.

By advocating for Emily and working collaboratively with professionals, the team helped ensure she moved to a placement better suited to meeting her long-term needs.

This story reflects our commitment to always prioritising the best outcomes for young people, even when that means supporting them to move on to a different service that can better meet their needs.

At our homes, success is not simply about keeping a placement — it is about ensuring every young person receives the care, support, and specialist provision that allows them the greatest opportunity to thrive.
