Sucess Stories - Callum
Turning Risk into Opportunity
When Callum, name changed for confidentiality, arrived at our home, professionals considered him one of the highest missing young people in Lancashire. Before moving to us, he had frequent missing episodes, had become increasingly influenced by risky peer groups, and faced significant contextual safeguarding concerns. Because of these risks, the Local Authority and safeguarding professionals agreed he should move placements to create distance from those influences. On arrival, Callum had very little trust in adults, had completely disengaged from education, and found it very difficult to build relationships with professionals, often preferring to keep his distance.
Understanding the Young Person
The staff team understood that the first step in supporting Callum was to build trust at his pace. Through consistent care, patience, and clear boundaries, staff worked to create a safe and predictable environment where Callum could begin to feel secure.
Over time, those small moments of engagement grew into meaningful relationships with the staff team, something that had previously been very difficult for him.
Re-engaging with Education
One of the biggest milestones in Callum’s journey has been his return to education. With encouragement and ongoing support from staff, he has begun to engage consistently with learning, something that once seemed almost impossible.
Learning Life Skills
As Callum became more settled, he also started to develop important independence and life skills within the home. He has learned how to cook and bake, often taking pride in preparing food and sharing it with others.
These moments have helped him build confidence and a sense of achievement.
Positive Engagement
Callum now regularly engages with staff in activities, something that would never have been imagined when he first arrived. Whether it’s spending time together doing activities or simply chatting and relaxing around the home, these interactions show the positive progress he has made.
He has also become a positive presence within the home, showing respect for the staff team, the house, and the other young people around him.
The Outcome

Today, Callum is a polite, respectful and much happier young person. He has built strong relationships with the staff team, is engaging with education, and is developing the skills he needs for a safer and more positive future.

His journey demonstrates how removing contextual risks, providing consistent support, and building genuine relationships can completely change the trajectory of a young person’s life.

The progress Callum has made is something he should be incredibly proud of, and we are proud to have been part of that journey.

Callum has also grown in confidence when making safer choices, showing a greater ability to manage his behaviour and respond positively to guidance from staff.
